What is The Spring Dance Workshop?

The Creative Space presents The Spring Dance Workshop in collaboration with The Dance Institute of Washington and Community on 14th. This immersive event is tailored exclusively for professional and pre-professional dance artists to foster their creative excellence.

The Spring Dance Workshop has two components: classes and an informal showing. Classes are facilitated by United States Ambassador and international dance artist Sanchel Brown and DIW incubator artists. The informal showing of works-in-process chosen to present through a selection process.

10:00 AM - 11:30 AM | Dunham Technique

Within this class, participants will engage in the fundamentals, theories, and philosophy of the Dunham Technique created by dance pioneer Katherine Dunham. Participants will learn to identify the aesthetic principles of the Dunham Technique and develop physical and artistic skills such as explicit body isolation, articulation of the spine, dancing with a low center of gravity, grounded-ness, polyrhythm, and individuality of movement expression.

11:30 AM-1:00 PM | Contemporary + Casting Call

Experience the seamless fusion of movement and performance in this dynamic contemporary dance workshop. Led by Marcus Isaiah, participants are invited to explore the fluidity and versatility of contemporary dance techniques, honing their skills in expressive storytelling through movement. This workshop serves as a canvas for creative exploration and personal growth, encouraging participants to embrace uninhibited self-expression. Delve into the art of performance, refining your ability to convey emotions and narratives through contemporary dance. 2:00 PM-3:30 PM | afro con[TEMPO]rary  

This class uses dance as a tool to explore the intricate rhythm and pulse derived from African music. This technique specifically blends Ballet, Modern and Afrocentric movement to develop aesthetic and strength. The goal is to leave the class with a new perspective of how musicality refines artistry.
